Ben Bella, Ahmed

   Algerian political figure
   Born in Marnia, Algeria, Ahmed Ben Bella was a former officer in the French army who became one of the leaders of the Algerian uprising against French rule. He was interned in France from 1956 to 1962. Freed after the évian accords, he served as president of the Council of Ministers and then as president of the Algerian Republic (1963). Overthrown in 1965, he was imprisoned. Released in 1980 and exiled to Europe, Ben Bella returned in 1990 to Algeria where he founded the Mouvement pour la démocratie en Algérie (MDA).
